How eligibility works ↓Mental Health Treatment Plans
Start with your chosen GP. We’ll help with the rest.
A Mental Health Treatment Plan is prepared by a GP when it is clinically appropriate. It records your needs and goals and can give eligible people access to Medicare benefits for psychology.
Book with your chosen GP
Ask for a longer appointment to discuss your mental health and a Mental Health Treatment Plan.
Check what the practice needs
The clinic may ask you to complete a short questionnaire or provide information before your appointment.
Write down what is happening
Bring notes about how you have been feeling, how it affects daily life and the support you may need.
Talk with your GP
Your GP will assess your needs and decide whether a Mental Health Treatment Plan is appropriate.
Your GP prepares the plan
Appointment length, fees and bulk billing are set by the practice. Ask about costs when you book.
Ask for a referral to MTM Health
Your GP can refer you to MTM. Send us the referral and plan documents, then choose your psychologist.
Prefer an online GP appointment? Ask your usual GP or MyMedicare practice whether telehealth is available and whether you meet Medicare’s telehealth eligibility requirements.
Common questions
Clear answers before you begin.
01What is a Mental Health Treatment Plan?+
It is a plan prepared with your usual GP or another eligible doctor. It records your mental health needs, treatment goals, referral arrangements and review plan, and may give eligible people access to Medicare benefits for psychological treatment.
02How do I get a Mental Health Treatment Plan?+
Book a longer appointment with your usual GP and tell the clinic you want to discuss your mental health. Your doctor will assess your needs and decide whether a plan and psychology referral are clinically appropriate.
03How many psychology sessions can Medicare support?+
Eligible people may claim Medicare benefits for up to 10 individual and 10 group mental health treatment services in a calendar year. An initial individual referral can cover up to six sessions, followed by a GP review if further sessions are appropriate.
04Will I pay a gap fee at MTM Health?+
No. Every eligible online psychology session under a valid Mental Health Treatment Plan is bulk billed. You do not need a concession card or financial-hardship application. Medicare eligibility, annual limits and cancellation terms still apply.
05Can I book a private session?+
Yes. Private sessions are available without a Mental Health Treatment Plan or after Medicare-funded sessions are used. We will confirm the current fee and session arrangements before you book.
06Can I choose my psychologist?+
Yes. Search by what you are experiencing. Our team can also help when no exact match is currently available.
07Can I see an MTM Health psychologist by telehealth?+
Yes. MTM Health provides secure online psychology appointments across Australia, allowing clients to attend from a private and comfortable location.
