Psychological support

Relationship distress support

When relationship patterns are affecting your mental health, individual therapy can help you understand what is happening and decide how you want to respond.

Understanding your experience

What this can feel like.

Relationship distress may involve conflict, disconnection, separation, betrayal, family tension, caregiving strain or repeating patterns that leave you feeling anxious, depleted or unsafe. MTM Health provides individual psychological treatment rather than couples counselling under Medicare.

Common signs and experiences

Everyone’s experience is different. You may recognise some of these patterns without experiencing all of them.

How psychology can help

Treatment centred on your goals.

A psychologist will work with you to understand what is happening, what maintains it and which changes feel both meaningful and achievable.

  1. 01

Understand attachment, communication and conflict patterns

  2. 02

Clarify needs, values, boundaries and decisions

  3. 03

Develop emotional regulation during difficult conversations

  4. 04

Recover from separation, betrayal or relational trauma

  5. 05

Build healthier patterns without losing your own sense of self

Therapeutic approaches

Modalities that may help.

The best approach depends on your needs, preferences, history and goals. Your psychologist may integrate more than one evidence-based modality.

Interpersonal therapy (IPT)

Works directly with current relationships, roles and transitions.

Schema therapy

Explores longstanding patterns in attachment, needs and relationships.

Systemic therapy

Considers the wider relationship, family and cultural context.

Acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT)

Supports values-based choices in complex relationship situations.

Good to know

Medicare-funded treatment is for the eligible individual’s mental health condition; it does not cover general couples counselling.
