Medicare and referrals

Your group sessions are separate from individual sessions.

Can I use my Mental Health Treatment Plan for group therapy?

Yes. Eligible patients with a Mental Health Treatment Plan can claim Medicare benefits for up to 10 individual sessions and 10 group therapy sessions per calendar year. Group sessions do not reduce the separate allocation of individual sessions.

A Mental Health Treatment Plan does not expire, but group therapy is not automatic. You must also have a valid referral for group therapy from an eligible referring practitioner. A new referral is required for each course of individual or group treatment.

MTM Health can explain what to request from your GP and help with the next step. Eligibility, clinical suitability, Medicare claiming limits, referral requirements and availability apply.
